Therapy for Spirituality and Faith Concerns
In Pembroke Pines, FL and Online
Written by Karli Gallo, LMHC | EMDR-Certified Therapist | Pembroke Pines, FL
Questions and concerns about our spirituality or faith are deeply personal. Sometimes deeply confusing, sometimes deeply wonderful, or deeply painful.
Therapy for spirituality or faith concerns, including religious trauma, is for those who are at many different points: some are questioning long-held beliefs, others maybe feel disconnected from their faith, and some are navigating difficult experiences within religious communities. No matter your role as leader, attender, or seeker, and no matter whether you’re staying, leaving, or exploring something new, therapy offers a space to explore these concerns openly, without pressure or judgment.
At Unbound Psychotherapy, I offer a space where your questions are welcome, your pain is taken seriously, and your beliefs are yours to hold or release on your own terms.
What is therapy for spirituality or faith concerns?
It may be time to seek therapy for spiritual or faith concerns if you’re:
Questioning beliefs that once felt certain or central to your identity
Feeling conflicted, guilty, or anxious about your beliefs or doubts
Deconstructing or a shift in your worldview
Feeling disconnected from your spiritual life or unsure what you believe anymore
You’ve had a painful or confusing experience within a church or religious community
Feeling judged, misunderstood, or hurt by other members of your faith community
Struggling to reconcile your values, identity, or life experiences with your beliefs
Feeling pressured to “get it right” or fear making the wrong choice
Navigating a transition (leaving, joining, or redefining a faith community)
Holding questions you don’t feel safe asking in your current environment
You want to explore spirituality on your own terms, without being told what to believe
Feeling stuck between different belief systems or ways of understanding meaning and purpose
Therapy for leaders and those in ministry
If you’re in a leadership role where others rely on you spiritually, it can be especially hard to find space for your own questions.
You might consider therapy if:
You feel burnt out, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted
You carry the weight of supporting others but don’t feel supported yourself
You’re experiencing doubt but feel unable to express it openly
You’re navigating conflict within your congregation or leadership team
You feel pressure to maintain a certain image or level of certainty
Therapy can provide a confidential space where you don’t have to lead, perform, or have answers.
You don’t have to choose between faith and mental health
A common concern is whether therapy will challenge, dismiss, or try to change your beliefs. Good therapy doesn’t do that. Instead, therapy helps you:
Clarify what you believe and why
Process experiences that have shaped your faith
Work through doubt, grief, or confusion
Develop a more grounded, authentic sense of meaning and direction

Yes, therapy can help with religious trauma. At Unbound Psychotherapy, we have extensive experience using EMDR to resolve trauma symptoms caused by religious experiences or beliefs. This might include shame or guilt, self-hatred, compulsive perfectionism, anxiety from fear-based teaching, sexual challenges, trauma related OCD behaviors, and more.

Deconstruction is the process examining, questioning, or re-evaluating long-held beliefs.
